Oman Tourism Development Company SAOC (Omran) is pleased to announce that the Souq es Sabt, Muscat's first Farmers Market will begin its new season at the InterContinental Hotel Muscat on Saturday 19th November 2016 from 8.30am-1.00pm
Meaning “Saturday Market” in English, Souq es Sabt was founded by Omani entrepreneur Sara Al Asfoor after experiencing farmers markets on a holiday in Europe. This experience led her to start making home made pesto and crackers with her children from her home, which then expanded into setting up several stalls in a local park. Within 3 years the market expanded into incubating more than 50 entrepreneurs on average per year.
This season’s move to the InterContinental Hotel Muscat, through the sponsorship of Omran provides vendors and visitors an exciting central Muscat and iconic venue, which will provide greater capacity and convenience than ever before. It will enable the continued growth of what has become one of the most popular activities in Muscat during the cooler winter months, as well as an important platform for small businesses, entrepreneurs and local talent entertainers to develop in Muscat.
Sara Majeed Asfoor, founder and owner of Souq es Sabt commented:
“We are extremely grateful to the support of Omran and the Intercontinental Hotel Muscat for allowing us to host this coming season of Souq es Sabt in their exquisite hotel grounds. It is an exciting project with an aim to promote socioeconomic development in the Sultanate and this wonderful venue and will raise the level of excitement and atmosphere to even greater levels. We want to put on a really great show for Muscat and the local community as well as visitors and tourists – and this year will feature local talents, live cooking, bakers, chefs, artists, artisans, crafters and designers, just to name a few!
“We also are committed to providing an environment that actively encourages and supports small businesses and entrepreneurs with great products but who don’t necessarily have the business experience to turn an idea into reality. This is what Souq es Sabt is all about. In the last year alone, two of our vendors have gone on to open their own permanent business establishments in Muscat. Souq es Sabt has quickly become one of the most popular hangouts amongst Muscat residents and visitors alike.”
James Wilson, Chief Executive Officer, Omran added:
“Souq es Sabt is a valuable initiative on many different levels – both socially and economically both for the local community and international visitors to Muscat. In what will be its fourth season this year, Omran is committed to helping organisations that are taking proactive steps to empower and support tourism development in Oman. The market is a fun event for families and friends of all ages to experience, as well as being an important platform for Muscat’s small businesses and local talent to develop their experience and offering to ever increasing numbers of visitors to Oman each year.
Thierry Perrot, Area General Manager of InterContinental Hotels Group – Oman, commented:
“We are delighted to welcome the iconic Souq es Sabt Saturday Market to the InterContinental Hotel Muscat. I know from experience that the market has something for everyone – and this year will be bigger and better than ever before at the InterContinental to rival any farmers market in the Middle East or Europe. We look forward to welcoming everyone over the coming months.”
