Omran’s ‘Atana Musandam Resort’ Wins “Best Sustainable Project” in Oman
The newly opened Atana Musandam Resort, developed by the Oman Tourism Development Company SAOC (Omran) has been named “The Best Sustainable Project” during the recent Dossier Construction Awards& Summit 2014.
The event was held under the auspices of H.E. Eng. Salim bin Mohammed Al Naimi, Undersecretary of Transport, Ministry of Transport and Communications at the Intercontinental Muscat Hotel. The awards ceremony was attended by senior officials from companies in the construction, infrastructure, real estate, interiors and building materials’ industries.
An annual awarding ceremony organized by United Media Services (UMS) to represent the crowning achievement and important industry recognition for construction projects in Oman with the objective of engaging the industry performers, individuals, best practices, technology and project excellence with industry recognition.
The Atana Musandam Resort incorporates traditional and contemporary Omani architectural themes, and was designed and constructed in accordance to the prestigious LEED Green Building Certification criteria. The best sustainable project award recognition underscores the merits of the project and the vital role Omran plays in developing innovative and sustainable tourism destinations with advanced environmental specifications. By implementing international professional standards in developing and managing projects, Omran ensures the operational efficiency of the project for years to come.
Commenting on the award recognition, Eng. Commenting on the sidelines of the awards ceremony, jury member Rohan Thotabaduge, Design Associate at Atkins noted, “The Atana Musandam Resort is a real success story for Omran. Omran’s commitment to sustainability in the project and its effort to involve the community reflects its role in supporting SME development in the Musandam community, enhancing both its social and economic earnings.”
The environmental efficiency and use of sustainable practices for the hotel construction were the key factors for the awards judging panel, and ultimately qualified the project for the award of best sustainable project in Oman. The judging panel assessed the hotel based on a range of key criteria including minimizing environmental impact during the construction phase, engaging innovative technologies for water treatment for use in irrigation and landscaping, in addition to using water saving systems throughout the hotel to optimize water use. Additionally, during the development phase, the construction team implemented an ongoing policy of recycling through the re-use of local building materials in harmony with the surrounding environment.
